The Rio 2016 competition have come and gone, but there were plenty of gruesome injuries suffered by the competitors which have left them in hospital.
Here are 10 of the most gruesome accidents of the Rio 2016:
1. Gymnast Ellie Downie botched a landing from a somersault and fell on her neck during a floor routine.
She attempted to finish the routine but had to abandon the effort, requiring assistance to walk from the arena.
She was back on the competition floor less than ten minutes later and in action on the vault.
Three days later she fell off the balance beam during the artistic gymnastics final.
2. Gymnast Samir Ait Said's left leg snapped as he tried to complete his vault during team preliminaries in Rio.
The lower half of his shin was then seen to dangle grotesquely after the bone snapped loudly.
3. Dutch cyclist, Annemiek van Vleuten fractured three vertebrae and suffered concussion in a horrible road crash, after she skidded and flew over the handlebars and crashed into a high stone kerb on the Vista Chinesa descent near the finish.
Yet she says her only frustration is failing to pick up a gold medal in the race.
4. Road race favourite Vincenzo Nibali was surging towards victory in the cycling when he careered out of control.
He and Sergio Henao crashed on the same stretch on the final descent. He broke both collar bones while Henao fractured his pelvis.
5. Choppy waters left rowers struggling to stay in their boats, with Milos Vasic and Nenad Benik capsizing.
The Serbians went into the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the moment was said to be the first time a boat has capsized in the Olympics since Athens 2004.
6. Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan crashed out of the Olympics in agony as his left elbow gave way.
He made a second attempt to lift a whopping 195kg onto his broad shoulders but when he attempted the clean and jerk, his left arm gave way and he suffered an apparent dislocated elbow.
7. Australian Melissa Hoskins was stretchered off to hospital with a damaged hip following a huge team crash.
She was training at full race speed with the pursuit squad when she went down heavily with three teammates.
Hoskins was taken to hospital with an injured hip following the accident in the velodrome.
She was back on her bike less than 48 hours later, bandaged up and running through a training session
8. Great Britain's Mark Cavendish was involved in a horror high speed crash that took out three cyclists.
He clashed with Sanghoon Park , knocking the South Korean off his bike.
Park was carried out of the velodrome on a stretcher as he received medical aid and the race was briefly halted.
In the crash Italian Elia Viviani came off his bike along with Australian rider Glen O'Shea.
9. French rider Virginie Cueff shoved Laurine van Riessen onto the outer wall with her shoulder in the cycling.
That caused Olivia Podmore and Tania Calvo Barbero to crash behind in a heap.
The riders walked away unaided.
10. At least seven people were injured at the Olympic Park, when an overhead TV 600kg camera crashed to the ground from 65ft.
Among those injured in the incident was an 11-year-old girl.
One woman, bleeding from her head, was taken away on a stretcher while another walked away with a neck brace.
